THE WITCH’S HEART turns FIVE YEARS OLD today. THE WITCH’S HEART turns FIVE YEARS OLD today.

never once, in the ten years that passed between my first writing it and its publication in 2021, could I have predicted that this book would reach so many people. thank you for reading. and thank you for everything.

(I know this is the UK edition which technically came out a few months later in May 2021, BUT my Azula-inspired nails happened to match it, so…)

last Thursday marked six months in Iceland. some t last Thursday marked six months in Iceland. some things have gotten easier and others have gotten harder. just wanted to share some fun moments given the heaviness of everything right now in the world and especially back home. stay strong. stay safe. my heart is with you.

3) wooden image of my girl Gunnhildr poisoning Egill’s drinking horn in the saga, at the Egils saga exhibit at the Settlement Center in Borgarnes;

I AM ALIVE! I survived my first semester of grad s I AM ALIVE! I survived my first semester of grad school! the past five months in Iceland have been…challenging. but I am happy to be here and looking forward to what’s ahead.

wishing you and yours a safe and healthy holiday season and a happy new year! good news to come in 2026 🤞

(ALSO, because I’ve heard IG is making stuff up: if you ever get a notification that I’m using Meta AI, IT IS FALSE. gen AI is bad for our brains and bad for our planet and you could not pay me to use it. pay artists! pay writers! pay REAL PEOPLE to create! thanks!)

✨THE PHOTOS✨

I spend 99% of my time in Reykjavík surrounded by concrete and ducks, but here are some highlights, with image descriptions:

- the Codex Regius, which preserved several eddic poems we wouldn’t otherwise have; this little thirteenth-century manuscript contains roughly half of what we know about Norse mythology, and after working from digital images and facsimiles in undergrad, I was honored to meet her in person. (image 1: the author getting emotional over said manuscript)

- traveling to Eiríksstaðir and helping to cut turf for their new pit house (image 2, the author with the statue of Leifr; image 3, the author cutting turf)

- visiting Borgarnes and the historic farm at Borg where Egill and Þórólfr Skallagrímsson grew up (image 4, the author with Egill and his drowned son; image 5, art from Borgarnes quoting Egil’s first verse in the saga*)(Egill you are forever my favorite drunk 3-year-old poet)

- visiting Þingvellir (image 6: the author in front of Öxarárfoss, a very pretty waterfall)

- the scenery when I manage to get out of the city (image 7: a river at sunrise on the way to Borgarnes)

- always knowing where I am in the city by finding the church (image 8: Hallgrímskirkja looking spooky one autumn night, feat. a sculpture of a certain mistletoe dart because this was taken outside Café Loki)

* text: “I have come in fine fettle to the hearth of Yngvar, who gives men gold from the glowing curled serpent’s bed of heather; I was eager to meet him. Shedder of gold rings bright and twisted from the serpent’s realm, you’ll never find a better craftsman of poems 3 winters old than me. ~ Egill”
I moved to Iceland one week ago today. This wildly I moved to Iceland one week ago today. This wildly unflattering photo is what I’ve looked like during that time: cold (yay, no more Midwest heat wave) and wet (sensory nightmare, glad I brought two raincoats).

I had plans to post a bunch of content and maybe even start my blog and get my newsletter back up, but frankly…solo international moves are: not glamorous (unless you have way more money than I do, maybe???) and I forgot to film half the stuff I intended to film. 😅

With that said, I am so, so grateful to be here, excited for classes to start in a few weeks, and looking forward to sharing some actual book news someday. 🫠

More to come.
Eirik Blood-axe and Gunnhild Mother-of-Kings as th Eirik Blood-axe and Gunnhild Mother-of-Kings as they appear in THE WEAVER AND THE WITCH QUEEN (2023) (now with close-ups) - art by @morrow.comics !

WEAVER turns two today, and there’s a whole Amazon Prime TV show about these two on the horizon (unrelated to my books but based on the same history), so there is no better time to be sharing this! ❤️

Eirik and Gunnhild are my favorite quasi-historical losers (affectionate) (seriously, look up how long they actually ruled Norway) (it is not very long) and seeing my version of them brought to life so vividly is a dream. 🥹

And if I have my way, this won’t be the last you see of them in my work!! 👀

Thank you so much to Morrow Comics for taking on this commission and being so wonderful to work with. I am so excited for the next chapter of NJÁLSSON to drop!!! 👀
